Solanaceae

Called “nightshade family” in GBIF

Solanaceae, commonly known as the nightshades, is a family of flowering plants in the order Solanales. The family contains approximately 2,700 species, several of which are used as agricultural crops, medicinal plants, and ornamental plants. Many members of the family have high alkaloid contents, making some highly toxic, but many—such as tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants and peppers—are commonly used in food around the world.

A tomato telomere-to-telomere super-pangenome empowers stress resilience breeding.

Tomatoes you buy at the grocery store have lost much of their natural toughness over decades of breeding for looks and shelf...

Tomato crop-improvement / climate-adaptation

The plasma membrane ABC transporter Sl-ABCB5 mediates acylsugar secretion from tomato trichomes to confer insect resistance.

It brings us closer to tomatoes and other garden crops that naturally fend off insects on their own, potentially reducing the...

A tobacco-rapeseed rotation model for economically sustainable phytoremediation of cadmium-contaminated farmland.

Cadmium from contaminated farmland ends up in the food you eat, and this approach shows that farmers can clean that pollution...

Tobacco phytoremediation / soil-health

Biochemical and molecular regulation of tomato ripening and disease defense: A trade-off between quality and postharvest integrity.

It could lead to tomatoes that stay fresh on your counter or in stores for much longer without going moldy, reducing the...
