The tomatoes, potatoes, and leafy greens in your garden already contain compounds like flavonoids and alkaloids that can nudge an animal's immune system, long before anyone engineers them to carry a vaccine.

Scientists have been growing vaccines inside plants like lettuce, potatoes, and tobacco by engineering them to produce a piece of a virus or bacterium. But when researchers tested plain, non-engineered plant tissue as a control, they kept noticing something odd: the plain plant matter itself was stirring up immune responses. Natural plant chemicals like alkaloids, flavonoids, and carotenoids seem to be acting as built-in immune boosters, which means the plant isn't just a passive factory, it's an active ingredient too.
