Bacterial blend gives tomato plants bigger, healthier harvests

The tomato plants wilting in your raised bed by midsummer might thrive with a microbial boost instead of another round of synthetic fertilizer.

Researchers combined six helpful bacteria into a liquid or powder mix and applied it to tomato plants three different ways: coating the seeds, dipping the roots, and treating the soil. Plants that got the liquid version grew taller, flowered more, and produced nearly 20% more fruit than untreated plants, while also packing in more vitamin C, carotenoids, and flavonoids. The liquid formula also stayed effective on the shelf for over a year, which matters if you want a product that actually works when you finally get around to using it.
