Medicinal Plants

The peony blooming in your garden and the licorice root in your herbal tea cabinet both contain compounds that researchers are now studying as potential asthma treatments, one more reason these old-world medicinal plants deserve a spot in a home apothecary garden.

Scientists pulled together 127 animal studies looking at natural compounds from plants, things like paeoniflorin from peonies and crocin from saffron, to see if they could help with asthma. In mouse models, these plant compounds calmed down the overactive immune responses and swelling in airways that make asthma so miserable. It's exciting early evidence, but it's all been tested in mice so far, not people, so there's a long road before anyone should expect an herbal asthma cure.

Key Findings

1

127 studies analyzed, mostly using mouse models of asthma triggered by egg protein (ovalbumin)

2

Eight specific plant compounds (including paeoniflorin, crocin, and withaferin A) showed strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects by calming immune pathways and oxidative stress

3

No human clinical trials exist yet; all evidence is preclinical, and many studies lacked rigorous randomization and blinding

chevron_right Technical Summary

A review of 127 animal studies found that natural plant compounds called terpenoids, found in herbs like peony and licorice-family plants, reduced asthma symptoms in mice by calming immune overreactions and inflammation. The findings are promising but come only from lab animal studies, not human trials yet.
