Plant Signaling

If you grow eggplant or other nightshades and your neighbors spray pesticides that drift into your garden, natural compounds already present in plants could be used as a protective treatment to help your vegetables recover.

Chlorpyrifos is a common pesticide that, even when it drifts onto plants unintentionally, can seriously harm eggplant growth and its ability to photosynthesize. Scientists tested two natural signaling substances — GABA (found in many living things) and nitric oxide — and found that applying them together gave eggplants a much stronger defense against pesticide damage than either one alone. The combination helped restore nearly normal growth, leaf pigmentation, and the plant's internal antioxidant defenses.

Key Findings

1

Chlorpyrifos stress reduced eggplant biomass by 48%, chlorophyll a by 35%, and photosynthetic performance index by 52%

2

Combined GABA + nitric oxide treatment outperformed either compound applied alone in restoring growth, pigmentation, and photosynthetic function

3

The GABA + nitric oxide combination helped maintain redox balance by boosting the plant's own antioxidant system, reducing oxidative damage from pesticide exposure

chevron_right Technical Summary

Researchers found that applying GABA and nitric oxide together to eggplant seedlings significantly counteracted the growth and photosynthesis damage caused by chlorpyrifos pesticide exposure, offering a natural, chemical-free way to protect crops from pesticide stress.
