One gene edit gives tomatoes a simpler root and salt tolerance

If you've ever watered a tomato plant with municipal water high in salts or gardened near a coastal area, this points to a future where breeders can tune root growth to shrug off salty soil instead of wilting under it.

Researchers found a small gene called Aucsia2 that normally tells tomato roots to branch out. When they used CRISPR to switch it off, the plants grew simpler root systems with fewer side roots, but still produced just as much fruit. Surprisingly, these edited plants also held up much better under salty conditions, apparently because they never over-reacted with the stress hormones that usually cause salt damage in the first place.
