Medicinal nightshade herbs may absorb toxic metals from soil

If you grow or forage ashwagandha, black nightshade, or datura, the soil they're planted in matters more than most gardeners realize, since these plants are natural cadmium magnets and that metal can end up concentrated in the leaves and roots you'd harvest.
Ashwagandha, black nightshade, datura, henbane, and even peppers are all cousins in the nightshade family, and some of that family's members are so good at soaking up cadmium from soil that scientists use them to clean up polluted land. The problem is that the same root and cell tricks that make a plant great at pulling metal out of dirt also mean the herbal versions can carry that metal right along with them, and metal exposure can unpredictably shift how much of the plant's active medicinal chemicals show up. Researchers reviewing the evidence found that most contamination tests on finished herbal products just measure total metal levels without checking how much actually transfers into a tea or extract, so there's still a real gap between knowing a plant absorbed metal and knowing how much ends up in someone's cup or capsule.
