The waste left behind by insect farming, something usually thrown out, could end up feeding the tomato plants in your backyard raised bed more efficiently than the fertiliser bag from the garden center.
Scientists took frass, which is the leftover material from raising insects like black soldier fly larvae, and combined it with tiny particles of zinc oxide and silica to make a new kind of plant food. When they tested it on tomato plants, the nutrients seemed to help the plants grow better. It's an early step toward turning insect farming byproducts into something useful for growing food instead of tossing them out.
