Analytics
This site uses GoatCounter for analytics. From GoatCounter:
- No cookies are set by the analytics tracker
- No personal data is collected by the analytics tracker
- No tracking across sites
- GDPR compliant by design
We see aggregate page views, referrers, and browser types. We cannot identify individual visitors via analytics.
Newsletter & Signup
When you subscribe to the weekly newsletter, the following data is collected:
- Your email address is stored in Resend, our email service provider. We use it to send the weekly newsletter and a one-time confirmation email when you sign up.
- Your IP address is logged briefly at sign-up and confirmation moments for abuse prevention. Logs are retained for 24 hours by Netlify, then deleted.
- A truncated hash of your email (first 12 characters of a SHA-256) is logged alongside the IP for correlating sign-up and confirmation events. Also 24-hour retention.
- To stop automated signup floods, the form runs Cloudflare Turnstile — a bot challenge that may inspect your browser headers and set a short-lived cookie. See Cloudflare's privacy policy for their handling.
We do not share your email with anyone. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every newsletter — clicking it removes you from the Resend audience.
For Resend's own data handling, see their privacy policy.
Data Sources & Licensing
Research Abstracts
Article abstracts are sourced from PubMed, bioRxiv, and iNaturalist. Abstract previews are displayed with links to the original source. Copyright for abstracts is held by the respective journal publishers or authors.
Wikipedia Content
Plant descriptions and images are sourced from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. This content is used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0). Attribution is provided via links to the original Wikipedia articles.
AI-Generated Summaries
Article summaries, key findings, and editorial pulse notes are generated using AI to make research more accessible. These are clearly labeled and always link back to the original source material.
Cookies & Storage
Plant News itself sets no tracking cookies. The site uses your browser's localStorage to remember the last date you visited (so we can mark new articles since) — this stays on your device. The Cloudflare Turnstile challenge on the newsletter form may set a short-lived first-party cookie during the bot check; see the Newsletter & Signup section above.
