Wild carrot is blooming everywhere and citizen scientists are noticing

iNaturalist Community

Citizen Science

That flat white umbel bobbing along the roadside or field edge is wild carrot, the direct ancestor of the carrot in your garden, and learning to spot it opens up a whole world of edible and medicinal foraging in ordinary landscapes.

Wild carrot is having its moment right now. Over a thousand people logged sightings this week on iNaturalist, the nature-tracking app, because the plant is in full bloom across fields, roadsides, and disturbed ground throughout North America and Europe. It's the same species that gave us the cultivated carrot, and you can recognize it by its lacy white flower clusters and the single tiny purple floret often sitting at the center.

Key Findings

1

1036 research-grade observations recorded in a single week on iNaturalist

2

Wild carrot (Daucus carota) ranks among the most observed plant species platform-wide this week

3

Observation spike aligns with peak summer flowering period when umbel blooms are most visible

chevron_right Technical Summary

Wild carrot logged 1036 research-grade observations on iNaturalist this week, making it one of the most-watched plant species across the platform. The surge reflects peak summer flowering season, when this roadside native becomes hard to miss.
