Manure beats fertilizer at reshaping soil life long-term
Twenty years of hauling manure onto the same Kenyan plots did something bagged nitrogen never managed. At the driest, most nutrient-poor site, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (the ones that convert nitrogen into a form roots can actually take up) jumped 30-fold over untreated soil. The plots fed synthetic fertilizer alone came out with their microbial community more or less as it started.
The trial ran manure against crop leftovers and against mulched leaves of Tithonia diversifolia, the shrubby Mexican sunflower that farmers cut and drop as green fertilizer. Manure alone shifted 65 bacterial genera and left a fungal signature distinct enough to sort soils by treatment with 96% accuracy. Place still ruled overall: climate and soil type explained 30% of the bacterial variation and 28% of the fungal. What you add works inside where you garden, not over top of it.
A much faster experiment this week points the same direction. Researchers blended a fertilizer made from recycled sewage ash and fish scraps with a fungus, Talaromyces adpressus, then ran water through soil columns. The fungal version held onto its nutrients: 35% less phosphorus and 41% less potassium washed out, and every single seed sown in it germinated, against roughly two-thirds in plain soil.
So the organisms you feed turn around and hold the nutrients in place for you, which is a better deal than any bag offers. Twenty years is a long wait for a result. Your beds have been running the same trial the whole time, just without anyone writing it down.
