A friendly root fungus evens out plants' disease resistance

The soil microbes clinging to your tomato or houseplant roots might matter more for disease resistance than which variety you picked at the nursery.
Plants of the same species can have very different genes for fighting off disease, and some varieties are naturally more vulnerable than others. This study found that a beneficial fungus living inside plant roots can level the playing field, helping genetically weaker plants resist pathogens almost as well as naturally tougher ones. It's a reminder that a plant's health depends as much on its microscopic root partners as on its own DNA.
