Leafy park trees cool streets far better than street-canyon trees

If you're picking a shade tree for a yard or noticing which park bench feels cooler in August, this study explains why: leaf-dropping trees like linden and oak create a real temperature buffer in open spaces that evergreen conifers and hemmed-in street trees just can't match.

Researchers measured air temperature at two heights under four common city trees in a Portuguese city and found that leafy, dense-canopied trees like linden, plane, and oak cool the air near the ground by 1 to 5 degrees Celsius in summer, with warmer air trapped up top and cooler air sitting below. Once those trees dropped their leaves in winter, that cooling effect disappeared entirely. The trees worked best in open parks and struggled to cool much of anything when squeezed into narrow street canyons.
