Backyard tree watchers reveal how climate shifts flowering timing
Jackfruit might now be one of the best-documented flowering trees on the planet. People across Kerala, India photographed their neighborhood jackfruit, mango, and tamarind for nine years running and logged 165,006 flowering events from 19,591 individual trees.
Matched against satellite weather, three things moved bloom timing: soil moisture, how cool the nights got, and how much sun the canopy took. None of it held steady across the region. Same species, different habitat, different response, with wide swings year to year and even tree to tree. Your microclimate does most of the work here, not the regional average.
Which is what makes a warming experiment elsewhere in this week's research sting. Heated plots shifted flowering and bee activity together, so the timing stayed matched. The partnership frayed anyway: fewer flowers, thinner nectar, and bee visits dropped. Everyone arrived on schedule and found less to share.
The counterweight comes from counting the night shift. Across 23 networks worldwide, folding moths and other after-dark visitors into the daytime tally raised a plant community's resistance to pollinator loss from 68.6% to 72.6%, because plants visited around the clock hold the whole thing together. And barley run through three generations of cold snaps handed the toughness down: survival climbed from 68% to 85.5% in lineages whose grandparents got frozen. Plants keep records of their own weather. Yours are worth keeping too.
