Corn monoculture soils breed more antibiotic-resistant bacteria than diverse farms

The soil under a diverse backyard vegetable bed or crop-rotated farm plot is quietly doing you a favor by keeping antibiotic-resistant bacteria in check, something a chemically dependent monoculture can't manage as well.

Scientists compared soil from different types of farms and found that fields planted with the same crop year after year and treated heavily with chemicals harbored more genes that let bacteria resist antibiotics. Farms that rotated many different crops and used fewer inputs had healthier, more diverse soil microbes, which seemed to naturally crowd out the resistant bacteria. It's a reminder that how we farm shapes hidden microscopic communities with real consequences for human and animal health.
