Cattails thrive in flooded mine waste while cleaning up pollutants

If you've ever noticed cattails colonizing a ditch or retention pond, this shows why they're a go-to plant for cleaning up contaminated water: they get better at pulling in metals the wetter conditions get, without dying or stunting.
Scientists flooded soil from an iron mine and found the water pulled more metals and pollutants out of the waste than normal moist soil did. Instead of struggling, a wetland plant called cattail actually built bigger, sturdier roots and pulled in 50 to 178% more of those pollutants, growing just fine the whole time. That makes cattail a strong candidate for cleaning up polluted mining sites naturally.

Waterlogging raised pH from 6 to 7, total dissolved solids from 61.9 to 140.8 ppm, and electrical conductivity from 113.2 to 282.1 µs/cm in iron mining tailings
Cattail uptake of elements (Al, Cd, Cr, Pb, Fe, Ca) increased by 50 to 178% under waterlogged conditions compared to field capacity
Waterlogged cattails showed increased root and shoot dry mass, root:shoot ratio, root cortex area, exodermis thickness, and vascular cylinder area, indicating no growth limitation despite higher pollutant uptake
