The knobby, mango-scented rhizome sold in Asian grocery pickle aisles as mango ginger isn't just a curry ingredient, it's shaping up as a candidate for protecting organs from everyday toxin exposure, and it grows in the same warm, humus-rich beds as true ginger and turmeric.

Mango ginger is a rhizome related to turmeric that tastes like green mango and smells like ginger, and people already use it in pickles and traditional remedies. Researchers gave mice a liver-damaging chemical and then treated some with mango ginger extract, finding that it lowered the harmful blood markers of liver and kidney stress and helped the organs' tissue look normal again under the microscope. Computer modeling also showed that specific compounds in the plant fit snugly into proteins involved in inflammation and oxidative damage, hinting at how the protection might work.
