Turmeric's active compound doesn't undo pesticide damage in lab cells

The turmeric root sitting in your spice rack is being studied as a shield against pesticide exposure, and this study is a reminder that 'natural' compounds don't automatically cancel out chemical harm just because they come from a plant.

Researchers grew mouse testicular cells in a dish and exposed them to atrazine, a common weed-killer, alongside curcumin, the yellow pigment extracted from turmeric root. Rather than protecting the cells, the curcumin-atrazine combination made things worse: fewer cells survived, even though hormone production went up. It's a useful caution that plant-derived compounds can have complicated, sometimes contradictory effects when mixed with environmental chemicals.
