Knowing which of the 208 plant species each threatened animal depends on, and in which season, tells conservationists exactly which plants to protect or restore to keep these species from going extinct.
Researchers collected fresh droppings from five kinds of wild mountain goats and deer living in the same Himalayan valley, then used DNA testing to identify every plant fragment inside. They found each animal has its own favorite mix of plants and its own season of pickiness: one deer eats broadly across 115 plant types in summer, while another narrows down to just 50 plants in autumn. This kind of plant fingerprinting lets scientists see how animals quietly divide up the same landscape without starving each other out.
Key Findings
Fecal DNA barcoding identified 208 plant species across 174,871 sequenced reads from five sympatric Himalayan ungulates.
Hangul deer showed the broadest summer diet (115 plant taxa, Levins' niche breadth B=64.7), while Kashmir musk deer showed the narrowest autumn diet (50 taxa, B=14.3).
Dietary overlap between species pairs ranged widely (Pianka's O = 0.136 to 0.985), showing both shared forage and seasonal partitioning that lets multiple species coexist on limited mountain vegetation.
