Siberian stoneflies show three different ways to determine sex

If you've ever flipped over a streamside rock and found a flat-bodied nymph, you were looking at one of the most chromosomally diverse insect groups scientists study, a reminder that the small creatures sharing your local creek carry genetic puzzles still being solved.
Stoneflies are insects that spend their early life underwater in clean streams before emerging as flying adults. Researchers looked closely at the chromosomes of three stonefly species from Siberia and discovered that each species has a completely different way of setting up male versus female genetics, some with simple paired chromosomes and others with extra unpaired ones. This kind of variety in such closely related insects is unusual and helps scientists understand how sex chromosomes evolve.
