Desert crust microbes help lettuce and spinach survive space-like stress

The crunchy black crust you might scrape off desert soil and ignore is packed with microbes tough enough to help your vegetable seedlings shrug off drought, poor soil, and other extreme stress in the garden.
Researchers took biocrusts, those thin crusty layers of algae, fungi, and bacteria that form on desert soil, from the driest place on Earth and used them to treat lettuce and spinach plants. Even under harsh, space-like growing conditions, the treated plants sprouted more reliably, survived better, handled stress more easily, and ended up more nutritious than untreated plants. The idea is that these tough desert microbes could one day help grow food on long space missions and also make crops hardier here on Earth as the climate changes.
