If you compost at home or grow fruit trees, this points to seafood waste and other chitin-rich scraps as a potential soil amendment that fights stubborn root diseases instead of just feeding plants.
Verticillium wilt is a nasty fungal disease that lurks in soil for years and kills olive trees from the inside out. Researchers found that composting shrimp shells (which are rich in chitin, the same stuff in crab shells and insect exoskeletons) creates a soil additive that starves out the fungus and boosts the trees' own defenses. In pot trials, treated soil cut disease rates by more than half and produced taller, leafier, healthier olive plants.

Shrimp shell compost at 5% reduced fungal microsclerotia density by 39.6% and viable microsclerotia by 42.8% in infested soil after 60 days
Compost leachate inhibited fungal radial growth by up to 83.7%, and even filter-sterilized leachate retained 58.3% inhibition
In pot trials, 5% compost dropped model-estimated disease incidence from 85% to 30% and cut disease severity by 46.5%, while also increasing plant height, root/shoot weight, leaf area, and beneficial soil enzyme activity
