The polyphenols in the herbs and berries you grow don't work alone; gut bacteria have to break them down first, and this review maps out how that partnership might influence mood and memory.
Researchers looked at how friendly gut bacteria (probiotics) and natural plant compounds (found in things like turmeric, green tea, and berries) interact once they're inside your gut. It turns out the two seem to boost each other's effects: the bacteria help unlock beneficial compounds from plants, and in turn those plant compounds help the bacteria thrive, calm inflammation, and send signals up to the brain. The catch is that most of this evidence comes from lab and animal studies so far, with real human trials still catching up.
