Notorious invasive water plant cleans drug-laced wastewater efficiently

The floating water hyacinth choking ponds and waterways worldwide turns out to double as a pollution filter, soaking up pharmaceutical residues like acetaminophen and then converting into useful charcoal-like soil amendment once its cleanup job is done.
Researchers grew water hyacinth, the plant famous for clogging lakes and rivers, in wastewater spiked with acetaminophen, the pain reliever found in Tylenol. The plant absorbed the drug into its leaves and removed most of the water's organic pollution, all while staying healthy up to a certain dose by ramping up its own antioxidant defenses. Afterward, scientists baked the used plants into biochar, a porous charcoal that can filter more water or enrich soil, making the whole cleanup process pay for itself within about six years.
Key Findings
The system removed 95.3% of acetaminophen and 92.4% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from synthetic wastewater across five drug dosages (0.5 to 1.5 mg/g fresh weight)
Up to 1 mg/g FW acetaminophen exposure, the plant maintained stable reactive oxygen species levels by boosting antioxidant enzymes (SOD, APX, POD) and phenolic/carotenoid compounds, avoiding oxidative damage
Pyrolyzing the drug-laden biomass at 500°C produced porous, functional-group-rich biochar usable in water treatment or soil amendment, with the integrated system reaching a 6.2-year payback period and positive net present value
