Long pepper compounds may protect blood vessels by boosting cell energy

The spicy long pepper used in Indonesian cooking and traditional medicine contains compounds that researchers think could help tired, stressed blood vessel cells recharge their internal batteries.

Scientists reviewed what's known about Javanese long pepper, a spice related to black pepper, and its role in protecting blood vessels from the damage that leads to high blood pressure. The active compounds in this plant, including piperine and piplartine, appear to help the tiny power plants inside our cells (mitochondria) work better, reduce harmful oxidative damage, and keep blood vessel linings healthy. It's still early research done mostly in labs and animals, so human trials are needed before anyone should count on it as a treatment.
