Grape and turmeric compounds team up to heal gut lining

Medicinal Plants

The same plant chemistry that makes red grape skins and turmeric root prized in herbal medicine cabinets is now shown to switch on a specific gut-protecting enzyme, giving backyard herb growers a concrete reason to value these plants beyond flavor.

Your gut has a natural repair enzyme called CBS that helps keep the intestinal lining healthy and keeps gut bacteria in balance. In people with ulcerative colitis, this enzyme is running low. Researchers found that pairing resveratrol (from grapes) with curcumin (from turmeric) reactivates this enzyme far more effectively than either compound alone, healing gut tissue in mice and improving symptoms in a small group of patients already on standard medication.

Key Findings

1

CBS enzyme expression was significantly reduced in colon tissue from both UC patients and colitis-induced mice

2

CBS-knockout mice had worse colitis damage and severely impaired short-chain fatty acid production, showing CBS is essential for gut protection

3

The resveratrol-curcumin combination bound strongly to CBS protein, reduced inflammation, and restored gut microbiota only when CBS was present, and it improved outcomes in a pilot trial when added to standard mesalamine therapy

chevron_right Technical Summary

Scientists found that combining two plant compounds, resveratrol and curcumin, restores a protective gut enzyme and helps heal the intestinal lining in ulcerative colitis, working better together than either compound alone in mice and a small human trial.

Targeting cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS)-mediated cell stemness and gut microbiome homeostasis: mechanism and clinical study of combined resveratrol-curcumin treatment for ulcerative colitis.

Durable mucosal healing is the primary therapeutic goal in ulcerative colitis (UC). Intestinal epithelial stemness and microbiota homeostasis drive this healing process. Cystathionine-β-synthase (C...
