Citrus greening disease is caused by an immune system overreaction

If you've noticed shrinking, bitter, misshapen citrus at the store or watched a backyard orange tree decline for no obvious reason, this disease (Huanglongbing) is likely why, and this discovery points toward breeding trees that don't overreact to the infection in the first place.

Citrus greening disease has been wiping out orange, grapefruit, and lemon trees for two decades, and scientists always assumed the bacteria causing it were directly poisoning the tree. This study found that it's actually the tree's own immune system going into overdrive that causes most of the damage, similar to how autoimmune diseases work in people. When researchers turned off specific immune-signaling genes in citrus trees, the trees handled the infection much better, opening a new path toward disease-resistant citrus.
