Passionflower's citrus perfume vanishes 90% by mid-morning
Passiflora pohlii opens at dawn and fills the air with something close to citrus peel. Two hours later, ninety percent of that scent is gone, and the cells that made it have started taking themselves apart.
The perfume comes from the fringe of filaments ringing the flower's center, the outer corona, which holds specialized scent-producing cells. Geraniol dominates the blend. The flower stays fully hydrated the whole time, so this isn't a plant running dry; it's a plant that has no reason to keep advertising once the Ptiloglossa bees that fly at first light have finished their round.
That kind of tight fit between flower and visitor turned up again in two Ixora shrubs growing side by side. Butterflies made 69% of all visits, and their tongue length tracked corolla tube length almost exactly. The species with more nectar lost out because its tube ran 40.7mm, too long for most comers, while its neighbor shifted from orange to red as it aged, flagging which blooms were worth the stop.
The generous finding this week comes from 44 species in Tibetan alpine grassland: rare flowers persist by resembling their abundant neighbors closely enough to share the same pollinators, picking up visits they'd never draw alone. A separate modeling study found where a plant sits in space explains pollinator traffic about as well as its flower traits do. Something to chew on while you plan next spring's beds: your rare plant may not need its own crowd, just a popular neighbor.
