Cover crops in garden walkways cut future weeds by 80%

If you've ever pulled the same weeds from your garden paths year after year, this shows that planting something there on purpose (even just clover) can starve out next season's weed seeds before they get a chance to sprout.
Researchers planted grass and clover mixes in the walking paths between organic vegetable rows instead of leaving them bare or tilled, then checked how many weed seeds were left in the soil ready to sprout. The cover-cropped paths had 73 to 82% fewer germinable weed seeds than the tilled paths, mainly because fewer broadleaf weeds like carpetweed and grasses like foxtail survived to make seeds. It didn't matter whether the cover crop was a fast annual mix or a longer-lasting perennial one; both worked equally well, and both spread out weed sprouting over time instead of letting it all flush at once.
