That plastic mulch you spread to protect your beds is quietly shredding itself into fragments small enough to sabotage the fungal threads your plants depend on for water and nutrients.
A new review of microplastics in garden and farm soil found they delay germination, stunt roots, and degrade the partnerships between roots and beneficial fungi. Worse, decomposing crop residue left on top of plastic sheeting generates a reactive form of oxygen that tears the film apart faster, seeding the soil with more fragments. The very practice meant to enrich the ground accelerates the contamination beneath it.
But the same soil biology under threat is proving remarkably recruitable. Compost and organic fertilizers shift tiny soil worms toward the helpful, root-feeding kind. Ancient photosynthetic microbes, dried into powder, triggered tomato plants' own drought defenses. A single strain of soil bacteria made peppermint dramatically greener and more stress-resistant. Cover crops changed which microbes colonized rice leaves, boosting yields from below.
The underground allies are still there, and they respond fast when you feed them something alive instead of something petroleum-based.
