Bacteria and associated antibiotic resistance in air filter-derived biological material from utility vehicles at mechanical-biological treatment plants.

PubMed · 2026-05-14

Workers at mechanical-biological waste treatment plants in Poland are routinely breathing in air laden with dozens of bacterial species and antibiotic-resistance genes, as revealed by DNA sequencing of their vehicle cabin filters — posing serious occupational health risks that existing safety standards may not adequately address.

1

34 bacterial species were detected at meaningful levels across 9 vehicle air filters sampled at Polish waste treatment facilities in summer 2024

2

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were found covering drugs used exclusively in human medicine, in both human and veterinary medicine, and drugs not approved for human use at all

3

DNA next-generation sequencing revealed high bacterial species diversity even in this small sample, suggesting the threat is likely broader than previously measured
