Invasive Paulownia tomentosa Colonization Along I-81 Corridor
iNaturalist Community
Invasive Species
Princess tree spreads aggressively into natural areas and gardens near roadsides, crowding out native plants that local wildlife — and the ecosystems your neighborhood depends on — rely upon.
Researchers tracking plant sightings have noticed a massive spike in princess tree — a fast-growing tree originally from China — along Interstate 81 between Tennessee and Virginia. It loves bare, recently disturbed ground, so highway construction zones have become a perfect launching pad for it to spread. Once it gets going, it can take over quickly and push out the native plants that birds, insects, and other wildlife call home.
Key Findings
Princess tree sightings along the I-81 corridor increased by 340% between 2022 and the present study period.
Highway construction disturbance zones showed the highest density of colonization, with seedlings establishing in road cut embankments.
The invasion spans a multi-state stretch from Tennessee to Virginia, suggesting broad regional spread driven by infrastructure disturbance.
