Soil bacteria let peanuts thrive on less nitrogen fertilizer

Soil Health

Backyard legume growers, from peanuts to beans and peas, can use nitrogen-fixing soil microbes to get better harvests while applying far less fertilizer and reducing runoff into nearby waterways.

Peanuts normally need a lot of nitrogen fertilizer to grow well, but too much nitrogen pollutes soil and water. Researchers found that coating peanut seeds or roots with a helpful bacteria product called Biozote-max let plants grow bigger, form more of the root nodules that capture nitrogen from the air, and produce more pods, even when farmers used only half the usual fertilizer. One peanut variety, NARC-2019, responded especially well to this bacteria-plus-reduced-fertilizer combo.

Key Findings

1

Biozote-max combined with 30 kg N/ha produced the best overall growth, nodulation, and yield results compared to Biopower or nitrogen alone.

2

The NARC-2019 peanut variety formed significantly more root nodules and outperformed BARD-479 under the same PGPR and nitrogen treatments.

3

Antioxidant enzyme levels showed no significant change, indicating the bacteria promoted growth rather than triggering a plant stress response; total soluble sugars rose with bacterial inoculation and further increased with added nitrogen.

chevron_right Technical Summary

Adding a beneficial soil bacteria treatment called Biozote-max to peanut plants let farmers cut synthetic nitrogen fertilizer while still boosting growth, root nodules, and yield, especially in the NARC-2019 variety.

The peanut, also known as the groundnut, goober, goober pea, pindar or monkey nut (UK), is a legume crop grown mainly for its edible seeds, contained in underground pods. It is widely grown in the tropics and subtropics by small and large commercial producers, both as a grain legume and as an oil...
