Aged garlic extracts disarm two major tomato and pepper viruses

Crop Improvement

If you grow tomatoes or peppers, the viruses this study targets, tomato brown rugose fruit virus and pepino mosaic virus, are the ones that can wipe out a season's fruit with mottled, deformed harvests, and this research points to leftover garlic bulbs as a possible homegrown defense.

Scientists compared several Italian garlic varieties, including the prized Vessalico ecotype, and found that garlic extracts, especially from bulbs stored for several months, can break apart the outer shell of two nasty plant viruses that attack tomatoes and peppers. They even used computer modeling to show how garlic's sulfur compounds physically latch onto the virus's protein coat and jam it up. The exciting part is that this could turn garlic that's gone unsold or stored too long into a useful, eco-friendly spray for organic growers.

Key Findings

1

52 garlic accessions across four ecotypes (Vessalico, Messidrôme, Messidor, Caraglio) showed similar sulfur compound profiles typical of garlic stored 6-8 months at cellar temperature

2

Statistical clustering (HC, PCA, SOM) separated the four ecotypes and identified three sub-classes within Vessalico accessions, confirming chemical similarity to French varieties

3

All garlic extracts deactivated infectivity of Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) and Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV), with molecular docking showing sulfur compounds from aged extracts strongly bind the ToBRFV coat protein

Researchers found that extracts from an Italian heirloom garlic variety can disable two plant viruses that damage tomato and pepper crops, suggesting garlic waste could become a natural antiviral treatment for organic farms.
