Backyard gardens quietly feed and heal rural families
Food Forest
The patch of herbs and vegetables outside your door can double as a pharmacy and a paycheck, not just a food source.
Researchers visited a village in Indonesia and asked twelve families how they actually use the small plots of land around their homes. Turns out those yards aren't just decorative: families grow vegetables and fruit to eat, keep medicinal plants on hand like a living home pharmacy, and sell extra produce for income. It's a simple reminder that the space right outside your door can quietly cover several needs at once.
Key Findings
Home gardens (pekarangan) serve three main functions: family food source, medicinal plant supply ('living pharmacy'), and supplemental household income.
Study based on 12 respondents who are members of the local PKK Nutrition Garden group in Mapin Kebak village.
Qualitative analysis (Miles and Huberman method: data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing) was used to identify these functions from interviews and observation.
