Diabetic test strips repurposed to catch hidden peanut allergens

If you or someone at your table has a peanut allergy, this points toward a future where checking a snack for hidden peanut traces could be as easy as a blood sugar test at home.

Researchers took a glucose meter, the kind people with diabetes use, and rigged it to detect a peanut protein instead of sugar. When the peanut allergen is present, it triggers a chain reaction that eats up glucose in the test, and the meter reads that drop as a signal. In early tests on peanut biscuits and peanut drinks, the method worked accurately, though it still needs more testing on real contaminated food before it's ready for everyday use.

Key Findings

1

Detects Ara h 1 peanut allergen across a linear range of 50-1000 ng/mL with a detection limit of 22.19 ng/mL

2

Uses CRISPR/Cas12a enzyme activity to release glucose oxidase, converting allergen presence into a readable glucose meter signal

3

Spiked recovery tests in peanut biscuit and beverage extracts showed 101.58-104.68% accuracy with low variability (RSD under 3.44%)

chevron_right Technical Summary

Scientists built a cheap, portable test that uses a modified glucose meter, like the ones diabetics use, to detect peanut allergen traces in food within minutes, no lab equipment needed.

The peanut, also known as the groundnut, goober, goober pea, pindar or monkey nut (UK), is a legume crop grown mainly for its edible seeds, contained in underground pods. It is widely grown in the tropics and subtropics by small and large commercial producers, both as a grain legume and as an oil...
