AI image tool spots coffee leaf disease with 95% accuracy

Crop Improvement

If you grow any plant where leaf spots and rust are hard to tell apart with the naked eye, this shows how a smartphone camera paired with the right software could flag disease before it spreads through your beds.

Scientists in Pagar Alam, Indonesia, trained a computer program to look at photos of coffee leaves and tell healthy ones apart from those with leaf spot or leaf rust disease. They used one AI tool to pull out visual details from the images and a second tool to make the final call, and together they correctly identified the disease 95% of the time, far better than using the simpler method alone. The goal is a fast, lightweight app that farmers could use in the field to catch disease early and protect their coffee harvests.

Key Findings

1

Combining MobileNetV2 feature extraction with an SVM classifier achieved 95% accuracy, 95% precision, 94% recall, and 94% F1-score

2

Conventional SVM alone (without MobileNetV2 features) only reached 84% accuracy

3

The model classified three categories (healthy, leaf spot, leaf rust) across 180 test images resized to 224x224 pixels

chevron_right Technical Summary

Researchers combined two AI techniques to spot coffee leaf diseases from photos with 95% accuracy, a big jump from the 84% accuracy of a simpler method. This could help coffee farmers in Indonesia catch leaf spot and leaf rust early, before crops take a hit.
