Desert brittlebush spotted thriving along a busy Mesa, Arizona campus walkway

iNaturalist: rainyfinn

Native Plants

The silver-gray shrub with sunny yellow flowers along a Sonoran Desert walkway is a brittlebush, a drought-proof native you can plant in a hot, dry yard and mostly leave alone.

Someone spotted a brittlebush growing on S Backus Mall in Mesa, Arizona, and other iNaturalist users agreed on the ID. Brittlebush is a rounded desert shrub with fuzzy silver leaves and bright yellow daisy-like flowers. It grows happily in city landscapes across the Southwest with very little water.
