Medicinal Plants
The arjuna tree, a tall riverside species grown in warm-climate gardens and avenues across South Asia, holds bark compounds that researchers are now testing for gut health, giving a new reason to value the tree beyond its shade.
Arjuna is a large tree whose bark has been used in traditional Indian medicine for centuries. Lab and animal studies suggest its natural compounds, especially one called arjunolic acid, calm inflammation in the colon, protect the gut lining, and support healthy gut bacteria. Nobody has tested it properly in people with ulcerative colitis yet, so the evidence is encouraging but early.
Key Findings
Extracts and compounds from Terminalia arjuna, especially arjunolic acid, reduced colonic inflammation in preclinical ulcerative colitis models by modulating inflammatory cytokines and boosting antioxidant defenses.
Key phytoconstituents (flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids) helped restore mucosal barrier integrity and gut microbiota composition, alongside free-radical scavenging and cytoprotective effects.
Clinical evidence for anti-colitis effects is still lacking; current support is preclinical only, though the plant may suit food-based and gut-health product development.

Arjuna tree bark, a staple of Ayurvedic medicine, shows promise in animal studies for calming ulcerative colitis, a chronic gut inflammation. Human trials are still missing, so it's a lead worth following, not a proven treatment.
