Crossing two nearly identical sesame plants wastes a growing season, so knowing which varieties are genetically farthest apart helps breeders (and eventually farmers) get sturdier, higher-yielding seed crops faster.
Plant breeders want to cross varieties that are as different from each other as possible, because that mixing tends to produce stronger offspring. This study used a statistical method called Mahalanobis D2 to sort a group of sesame plants into clusters based on how genetically different they are, pinpointing which pairs would make the most promising parent combinations for future breeding.
