The gnarled roots sold in traditional medicine shops as 'han fang ji' come from a woody vine that's been used for centuries, and scientists are now finding lab evidence for why it might actually work against infections.
Fangchinoline is a natural chemical from the root of Stephania tetrandra, a plant long used in traditional Chinese medicine. Recent lab studies found it can block viruses from entering cells, help cells clear out bacteria like Salmonella, and fight fungal infections such as Candida. It's still early days: all the evidence so far comes from cells and animals in labs, not from treating actual sick people.
