Astragalus root sugars can reprogram immune cells to fight tumors

The astragalus root sold in herbal shops and grown in some medicinal gardens contains dozens of different sugar compounds, and this study finally identifies which specific ones actually do something in the body.
Astragalus is a root long used in traditional herbal medicine, and it's packed with complex sugar molecules called polysaccharides. Researchers sorted through over 30 of these compounds and found that certain ones can switch immune cells called macrophages from a mode that helps tumors grow into a mode that attacks them, and they pinned down exactly which chemical features make this work best.

Neutral and acidic polysaccharide fractions each made up about 47% of the crude extract, with neutral ones being smaller (5.1-110.9 kDa) and acidic ones larger (17.3-470.5 kDa)
A medium-sized neutral polysaccharide (14.7 kDa, called ARNP-2) showed the strongest immune-activating effect among the neutral compounds tested
For the acidic compounds, a carboxyl group at a specific carbon position was essential for activity, and lower methyl-ester content (23% vs 72%) made the compound more potent
