One soybean variety recovers better after drought stress

If you've ever watched a stressed garden plant perk back up after a good soak, this research digs into why some plants bounce back faster than others, and it turns out the answer is written in their genes.

Researchers put three types of soybean plants through a stressful 17-day dry spell, then watched how well each recovered after watering them again. One variety, called I700, handled the drought and the comeback better than the others, keeping more leaves and pods and using water more efficiently. The differences seem to come down to genetics, which could help farmers grow soybeans that need less water in the future.
