Bacteria living inside turmeric plants fight off deadly wilt disease

If you grow turmeric or ginger and have watched a plant wilt and die seemingly overnight, the culprit is often this same bacterial wilt pathogen, and this research points toward a future where a simple microbial inoculant could protect your plants instead of losing them.

Turmeric plants get attacked by a nasty bacterial disease that causes wilting and can wipe out entire fields. Scientists found that bacteria living inside the plant's tissues, not just around its roots, are much better at suppressing this disease than soil bacteria alone. Three specific bacterial species found living inside healthy turmeric plants reduced the disease-causing pathogen's population by 100-fold when tested on real plants.
