Engineered bacteria break down crop waste into usable sugar

The pile of rice straw or peanut shells burned or dumped after harvest could instead become a renewable sugar source, cutting the field-burning that fouls air quality near farms.
Researchers took two enzymes found naturally in sheep gut microbes, which are great at chewing through plant fiber, and attached them to the outside of lab bacteria like tiny tools on a Swiss Army knife. These modified bacteria could then digest tough agricultural leftovers, peanut straw and rice straw, breaking them into simple sugars, and unlike the loose enzymes alone, the bacteria could be reused for multiple rounds of this work.
Key Findings
Engineered E. coli cells displaying a combined glucanase and xylanase enzyme complex released 1.20 mg/mL reducing sugars from peanut straw and 0.51 mg/mL from rice straw after 48 hours
Treatment measurably disrupted plant fiber structure, reducing particle size and lowering crystallinity index of the straw
The surface-displayed enzyme system could be reused across multiple bioprocessing cycles on peanut straw, unlike free enzymes which cannot be recovered and reused
