Scientists find a genetic trick to edit spider mite DNA precisely

If you've ever watched fine webbing and stippled, yellowing leaves take over a tomato plant or a houseplant, you've met the two-spotted spider mite, and this research is a step toward understanding its biology well enough to fight it smarter.

Two-spotted spider mites are tiny pests that suck the life out of garden plants and houseplants, leaving telltale speckled leaves and fine webbing behind. Researchers found that turning off one of the mite's DNA-repair genes makes it much easier to make precise, intentional edits to its genome using CRISPR gene-editing tools. That's a big deal for scientists trying to understand how this pest works, since better gene-editing tools mean faster progress toward new ways to manage it.
