Plant compound sponge speeds up healing of mouth wounds

Chinese skullcap, a plant long used in traditional medicine, keeps turning up in modern labs because its main compound, baicalein, fights inflammation and helps cells heal faster than lab-made drugs.

Researchers took baicalein, a compound from the skullcap plant, and mixed it into chitosan, a material made from shellfish shells, to build small sponges for use in the mouth. By changing how thick and how sciencey (molecular weight) the chitosan was, they could make sponges that release the plant medicine quickly or slowly, stick to gums, fight germs, and help cells heal wounds faster than the plant compound alone.
