Traditional African plants show promise for fighting gum inflammation

Scientists took five plants long used in traditional medicine, including a type of aloe and a wild sesame relative, and tested how well their extracts fight the inflammation and oxidative damage behind dental problems. Several extracts turned out to be strong antioxidants and could calm down inflammatory immune cells in the lab, with one aloe extract also showing potent cell-killing activity at low doses. The results back up why these plants have been used for oral health problems and point toward possible new treatments as bacteria become more resistant to antibiotics.
