If you've ever wondered why the same seed potato or yam variety performs completely differently depending on when you put it in the ground, this crop shows planting date can matter more than genetics itself.
Fabirama is a lesser-known tuber crop grown in West Africa, kind of like a small potato relative. Scientists planted 12 different varieties at three different times and tracked how well they grew and how long they took to mature. The surprise: when you plant it made a bigger difference to the harvest than which variety you chose, meaning farmers could boost yields just by picking the right planting window.
