The fuzzy-leaved clary sage some gardeners grow for its fragrant flowers contains a compound potent enough to destroy parasitic worms, a hint that the plants in your herb bed may carry more chemical firepower than their culinary reputation suggests.
Clary sage is a Mediterranean herb long used in folk medicine, and researchers wanted to see if it could fight parasitic worms that infect sheep and goats. They broke the plant's extract down into pieces and tested each one, eventually isolating a single compound, sclareol, that killed adult worms completely within 90 minutes and stopped worm eggs from hatching. Under a microscope, the worms' outer skin and internal structures were visibly falling apart, showing the compound attacks parasites from both outside and inside.
